Migraines - Symptoms And Triggers

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 550

Migraine headaches are characterized by intense pain occurring in one or both sides of the head, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes visual interference (auras). Migraines are very common. About ten percent of the population has been diagnosed with migraines. Approximately five percent of the population suffers from migraines, but have not been diagnosed. Migraines affect three times as many women as they do men.

There are many symptoms that can accompany migraine headaches. In common migraines, the actual pain of the migraine is preceded by an aura or blind spot in the vision. This can be manifested in many ways, such as flashing or twinkling lights on one side of the head, or a bright zigzag pattern. These interferences can occur days or hours before a migraine begins, although in some cases they occur minutes before or even during the migraine. Not all migraines are preceded by these auras. Some migraine sufferers never experience these interferences, while others experience them only once in a while. Other symptoms include a pounding or pulsating pain in one or both sides of the head, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea with or without vomiting, blurred vision, stiffness of the neck, and sweating.

Migraines usually begin in childhood or early adolescence, but can also begin in early adulthood. While the absolute cause of migraines is uncertain, some experts believe they are caused by the swelling or inflammation of blood vessels in the brain. Others believe migraines are caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, including serotonin. Studies have shown that genetics are likely to play a role in whether or not certain people are at risk for migraines. Migraines are a chronic condition, but there are medications that can help ease the pain and other symptoms of migraines.

There are several types of migraines. Among these types are migraine without aura, which are characterized by many of the symptoms mentioned above, but without the visual interference. These migraines can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours. This is the most common type of migraine. Migraine with aura is the second most common type of migraine. It is characterized by intense pain on one or both sides of the head, and commonly include visual interference, such as flashing lights, spots, lines, or temporary loss of vision on just one side.

Abdominal migraine is a type of migraine that is most commonly diagnosed in children. Abdominal migraine is characterized by a dull pain or ache in the middle of the abdomen, and can produce nausea with or without vomiting or loss of appetite. Abdominal migraines may last anywhere from one to 72 hours, and usually have no head pain at all. Children who suffer from abdominal migraines are likely to develop migraines with head pain as they age.

There are several things that can trigger migraine headaches. Hormonal changes can cause migraines in women and adolescents going through puberty. Many women who suffer from migraines complain that migraines are more intense and happen more often around the time of their menstrual cycle. Stress is another common trigger of migraines. Sometimes migraines occur when stress has subsided, such as during a weekend after a long work week. Exposure to bright lights for prolonged periods of time can trigger migraines. Other triggers include some medications, physical exertion, and certain foods.
