People who suffer from migraine episodes may not take their headaches that seriously. Most, if not many, would dismiss it and merely take prescribed medications to relieve the pain. Aside from prescribed medications, over the counter medicines are also helpful and may quite often be just what you need when you suffer a migraine attack. With the many brands, types (capsule, tablet, liquid gel, etc.) and formulas (extra strength, night formula, etc.) for over the counter medication, you can determine those that just work best for you.
Experts are in agreement that migraine should not be ignored, for it increases the risk of stroke. Although their opinion still varies as to what degree migraine increases the risk of stroke. A migraine attack that would last for more than 3 days is coined the term status migrainousus, and this should not be disregarded. In this scenario, the pain attack may be uninterrupted or may be at intervals with pain free periods of only less than four hours. A trigger of status migrainousus could be depression, diet, hormones and medication overuse. Sleeping does not even provide any relief. Aggressive treatment is necessary if you are to suffer from status migrainousus. It is important to be aware of the fact that migraine can be life threatening for it can provoke coma, stroke and even death. Studies have indicated that migraine sufferers have an eighty percent higher risk of suffering from stroke as compared to those who don’t experience migraine headaches. The sad thing is that many migraine sufferers complain that they have encountered doctors who are skeptical about their migraine attacks. It is important that migraine sufferers recognize the warning signs of a stroke, for immediate medical attention is necessary if such symptoms begin to develop. Blurred or loss of vision, numb or weak feeling of the limbs and face, paralysis, dizziness, loss of coordination and difficulty in understanding and speaking simple sentences are just some of the many symptoms of stroke. Don’t think that because it is just a mere headache and it isn’t necessary for you to seek the necessary medical attention. A headache or migraine could be an indication of a disease or disorder that could be serious and needs immediate attention. The following warning signals should tell you to call and seek the advice from your doctor. You have to consider situations wherein the headache may occur three or more times in a week. Most, if not all, of the time it is necessary for you to constantly take medication for your headache in order to relieve the pain. Your headache may be accompanied by a stiff neck (indication of possible bleeding within the brain) or fever (sign of an infection). Slurred speech, loss of coordination with your feet, tingly or weak arms and legs, all coupled with frequent headaches could be an early warning sign for possible stroke. Chances should not be taken. When you experience something unusual whether it is a mild or a severe migraine, always seek medical advice from your doctor. Article Source: Migraine Guide This article has been viewed 235 times.
